Simple Homemade Whipped Cream

If you’ve never made whipped cream from scratch before, I am here to tell you that learning how to make it yourself is a total game-changer. This is seriously one of the easiest recipes you can make. It only has 3 ingredients! Not to mention, homemade whipped cream tastes so much better than store bought (in my opinion, but I think you will agree with me once you try this recipe).

Ingredients

Heavy cream: There really is no substitution for the heavy cream here. The cream (really the fat in the cream) is necessary to achieve that whipped texture.

Powdered sugar: I wouldn’t substitute another type of flour in this recipe. The powdered sugar helps to keep the whipped cream light and fluffy whereas alternative sugars can be too heavy for it.

Vanilla extract: I highly recommend using pure vanilla extract rather than imitation vanilla. I really think the flavor is better.

How to Make Whipped Cream from Scratch

You can make whipped cream in the bowl of a stand mixer or in a medium mixing bowl with a hand mixer. Place the cream in the bowl and use the whisk attachment on medium speed to whisk the cream until it is starting become light and fluffy.

There is a hand pouring in a small amount of vanilla extract into the whipped cream. The powdered sugar has also been added and is in the bowl but not mixed in yet.

Add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract and continue to whisk on medium-high speed until it forms light traces on the surface and soft peaks form when you lift the whisk.

Be careful not to over-whisk or the texture will start to become more dense like butter.

How to Store Homemade Whipped Cream

Homemade whipped cream should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

I recommend using it within 3-5 days for best results. Beyond this, you might notice it start to lose its texture.
